Player profile #48 – John Griffiths

November 17, 2012 at 7:06 am

People tend to think of the leaders in our nations capital as out of touch, but they couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to Canberra’s most influential man. John saw a distinct lack of people wearing skinny jeans, walking fixed gear bikes, and talking about bands you’ve never heard of – and decided to forget all that hipster shit and start up bike polo instead. Although we’re not convinced it wasn’t just so he’d have another place to check-in at on 4square. Here’s a little more about John.

City:  Canberra, Australia

Years played: One

Super power:  Rolling slowly in circles

Bike: Shogun, freewheel

Mallet: Ski pole with uncapped, closed sides head

Player Profile #47 – Marc AKA Nottnum

November 10, 2012 at 6:55 am
Notable for his high riding wool school socks and cheese cutter cap, few players have the bragging rights that Marc possesses.  Within the first hour of meeting him he informed me his grandfather (maybe Father, I forget) was a champion grass bike polo player ‘back in the day’.  For Marc polo is in his blood and this is evident in the energy he brings to the game.  After a short stint playing in Christchurch he moved to Timaru and was both the Genesis and Genius in getting Timaru Hardcourt established… it’d be fair to say he’s done a bloody good job there – AHBPC13 hosts and all. Here’s a little more about Marc.

City: Timaru, New Zealand

Team: Polo Not War

Years played: 2 years

Super power: School sock power

Bike: Charge, freewheel with front brake only

Mallet: Ski pole with capped , closed sided head

Player profile #46 – Mat Radcliffe

October 13, 2012 at 7:28 am

If the term gentlemen is unfamiliar to you, Mat is the guy that will re-introduce some harmony in your bad behaviour.  A constant bet is running on which part of Mat’s bike will break next. Before he got his current bike, at least a part a session needed to be replaced. Mat is also given full credit for dealing with his half wank full bladder team mates’ stupidity.  Here’s a little more about Mat.

Player profile #42 – Marky Penrice

August 25, 2012 at 9:00 am

AKA Scottish Mark left the mean streets of Glasgow for the mild manned streets of Christchurch.  He’s one of the Co-founders of Hardcourt in Christchurch and plays whenever his failing memory reminds him it’s “polo time”.  Marky is easily spotted on court with his Kermit green bike and off court with his large plastic bottle of luminescent red cider.  I’m told Marky’s sideline heckles are witty and insightful, if only I could work out what he’s saying under that thick Scottish accent. Here’s a little more about Marky

Player profile #38 – Sam Callander

August 11, 2012 at 9:00 am

Timaru Bike Polos voice of reason and mastermind of the ass kicking 2013 Australasian Hardcourt Bike Polo bid. Sam is a man of great defense with the breakaway streaks from goal resembling that of a cheetah going for the kill. Player profile #37 – Sasha Heath

August 8, 2012 at 8:41 am

Don’t be fooled by this girls exuberant high energy exterior, this is one street smart contender with a quick wit and sharp pencil to boot. Sasha turned up at Melbourne Polo in 2010 after side-lining the scene in London and quickly became as regular as shouty furniture commercials on Melbourne radio. Having graduated beyond her newbie court name, “the shuffler”, Sasha still keeps the fun in polo and is guaranteed to make you leave the court feeling like you got short changed in goal. Check out this girls talents off the court at www.hellotomato.com.au. Here’s a little more about Sasha.

Player profile #36 – Alan England

August 4, 2012 at 9:00 am

No compr-alan is one of the most enthusiastic players in auckland. The calm strength in motion. If he’s not breaking his bike to pieces he sometimes spectacularly uses the bike to break himself up. If you have any suspicion about how committed alan is to polo, ask him how long the ride from his home to the court is.  Here’s a little more about Alan.

City: Auckland, New Zealand

Team: No compromise!

Years played: 1/2

Super power: Tandem polo power!

Favourite heckle: Hit it harder!

Bike: Unknown (rubbish only), freewheel

Mallet: Fixcraft shaft with uncapped, closed sides head
